I recently found out at 36 that I am pregnant, YAAY, SURPRISE!!! The pill really is only 98% effective! Problem is, I was NOT prepared for this to happen to me and only have catastrophic short term health insurance with absolutely no maternal coverage, and after calling multiple companies to obtain maternal coverage today, am SHOCKED to learn that I have no recourse to obtain this for myself and the baby. This is because open enrollment is not until November, which would then make me wait until January to see an actual Obstetrician. I have done the math and I will be due to deliver this baby in January, so obviously Obamacare won't work for me in this instance. I apparently make too much money ($60k) for state assisted coverage and since I have no recent life changing events (Um, hellooooo, I am pregnant?) I don't "qualify" for open enrollment now. I would have had to be released from prison or divorced in past 60 days to qualify for that. SO here I am, siting at my desk at work, incredulous to the SAD FACT that I have no other options available to me to keep this child without going $50k out of pocket (that I don't have) into debt. Do the people in charge realize they make average middle class people struggle with terrifying decisions when they make up these inane rules on enrollment and available plans for your income? I am now fraught with despair and sadness, I had been eager to bring this life into the world but now all I see is a scary future with no insurance, excessive debt and no way to go forward.
Super sad about lack of options in Pittsburgh,
